There are SO many reasons why you may not be living your Soul truth and also may be totally unaware of it.
Society has a LOT of coping mechanisms embedded that enable us to distract ourselves, numb ourselves, lie to ourselves, and otherwise avoid dealing with the painful reality that we’re not happy deep down at Soul level where it really counts.
Let’s look at a big one….
This week we’ll look at the super obvious one that is great for immediate numbing but the next day… You feel crappy again: alcohol and food in the over-eating capacity.
The thing with this is that when you numb the uncomfortable feelings, you also dull your ability to connect to the happy sensations, emotions, and your Soul Truth.
It’s not pretty. And let’s not forget that alcohol is a depressant. I realized this when I was grieving and I thought I’d have a nice glass of wine to make me feel better while watching a movie. Quite the opposite happened, lol.
I guess it didn’t help that I chose a movie about a little boy whose dad abandoned him (not sure what I was thinking there – oh wait – now I remember! It was a Gerard Butler movie…) By the end of the movie I was sobbing and internally, energetically I could literally feel the heaviness and sadness. It wasn’t good. After that it was no drink-o while grieving-o for me.
The lesson there and what I embraced going forward was allowing myself to feel all the real emotions. Grief needs to be felt to be processed. All emotions just want to come up and alert us to things. And then I was able to stay connected to my Soul Truth too.
And for the record – I am not opposed to alcohol 😄 I’ve just found that moderation is the key to enjoyment. If only I could have imparted that wisdom to early 20s Twyla…
Any which way, our emotions are one of our greatest allies and inner compass components.
Recently I’ve been noticing that I get an immediate emotional reaction to things that aren’t Soul aligned for me. Hello dear Soul Truth indicator! It’s a very subtle sense of aversion and I know from experience now that this is gold for me. If listen to it I will stay on a beautiful Soul aligned and abundant path.
You can’t notice that if you’re disconnected from your feelings!
Through my personal and spiritual growth journey I’ve gotten to this fine tuned feeling noticing place, but in the beginning of it I needed to reconnect to feeling anything. Even the big “obvious” emotions.
For a good 2 or so decades of my life I’d actually shut down my emotions completely because not feeling anything made me feel strong and invulnerable.
Granted this was a necessary coping mechanism to get through some brutal early childhood shit.
Oh so many layers….
But back to alcohol and over eating.
If you feel that numbing yourself in these ways is currently one of your coping mechanisms, I invite you to ask yourself, “What is it I’m trying to run away from or avoid?”
It could be a work situation, an uncomfortable emotion, a relationship problem you can’t figure out how to fix, or something much deeper…. Really sit with the above question and be prepared to be brutally honest with yourself. If you’re ready.
Sometimes the reality is that we simply are not ready, and that’s perfectly ok.
But if you do feel ready then know that doing this work will lead to self-realization, personal growth and spiritual growth. And ultimately – once you’ve gone through the feelings and been able to process things – a much more Soul aligned life where you are living your Truth and loving it.
During this time it can be really beautiful and helpful to have a guide, someone who has walked the path and come out the other side shining. Someone like… ME!
